Mexico is a beautiful country that offers many opportunities for travelers. However, there are some precautions to take if you want to visit during the Covid-19 pandemic.
While Mexico has remained open during the pandemic and with minimum requirements, it may be complicated to go back home without a PCR test. This is why you’ll want to know where to get a PCR test in Cancun.
You’ll find several places all around Cancun that offer PCR tests to go back home, and we’ll go through all the details in this guide.
Requirements to Enter Mexico
There are currently no special requirements to enter Mexico, so anyone can get in, even unvaccinated travelers. Mexico is the right place for those who wish to go abroad without getting tested for Covid-19.
That being said, it’s important to note that you will need to pay for the $48 tourism tax that applies to all nationalities entering Quintana Roo. While this sounds like much, you can get it very quickly on Visitax in a couple of minutes at most.
Do You Need a PCR Test to Enter Mexico?
No, you do not need a PCR test or vaccination certificate to enter Mexico, nor any other documents apart from your visa and the receipt of your tourism tax if entering Quintana Roo.
How Much is a PCR Test in Cancun?
PCR tests in Cancun vary in price depending on the clinic you go to and if you want to get tested at home or at the clinic. Overall, the average cost for a PCR test in Cancun is $MXN2,500, or $US118, and $MXN3,000, or $US141 for tests done at home. Lastly, many hotels offer their guests free PCR tests, so you might want to check with reception first.
How Long Does it Take to Receive the PCR Test Results?
This again depends on the clinic and the workload they have. But, as a general rule of thumb, clinics will email you the results as fast as 6 hours and up to 36 hours after the test.
Get a PCR Test at Cancun Airport
Getting a PCR test at Cancun Airport is your most convenient choice. However, you might be out of luck if they’re too busy with many other tourists or if you can’t find the test units.
In fact, the PCR test units at Cancun Airport are mobile, and you’ll find them at each departure terminal. Other than that, there are a few more details to note:
- They operate every day, only between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM
- You will receive your results in 30-60 minutes for antigen tests
- The results will be emailed to you 24 to 48 hours after the test
- The cost of an antigen test is $MXN290 per person – or only $USD 14
- The price for a PCR test is $MXN2,000 per person – $USD94, cheaper than Cancun
- The mobile units do not offer appointments – they work on a first come, first serve basis
These mobile units at Cancun Airport are indeed cheaper than the clinics downtown. However, you should note that they have no contact information, which means that you’ll have to email them to the address provided on your test receipt.
We highly recommend getting to Cancun Airport with your PCR test results ready in order to avoid getting stuck for any potential issue. The mobile units are your last option, just in the unfortunate case you couldn’t get tested before.
Get a PCR Test in Cancun Downtown
As mentioned previously, some hotels, especially high-end ones, offer complimentary PCR tests to their guests, and some others for a small fee. In case you’re staying in an apartment or in a hotel that doesn’t offer PCR tests, this is where you can get tested:
Costamed is one of the most central hospitals in Cancun, and you can reach it in less than 20 minutes from the hotel area. Their prices are per below:
- PCR test: from $MXN 1,650 or $US 78
- Antigen test: from $MXN 550 or $US 26
- Rapid blood test: from $MXN 699 or $USD 33
Prices vary depending on different factors, and we recommend contacting Costamed to have more information.
Laclisa is one of the most popular clinics in Cancun for several reasons. While their PCR tests are slightly more expensive than other places, they are reliable and have modern facilities.
- PCR test: from $MXN 2,994 or $USD 150
- Antigen test: from $MXN 1528 or $USD 65
- Rapid blood test: from $MXN 999 or $50 USD
Laclisa also offers home tests, but they cost extra; you will have to contact directly to know the total cost.
Hospiten is another medical institute where you can get tested for Covid-19. It is an international brand with branches in Spain, Jamaica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Cancun.
While they offer multiple tests, they do not publicly display their rates, and you’ll have to contact or visit them while in Cancun to know their PCR test prices.
Just like Hospiten, Amerimed Cancun doesn’t show their prices on their website, and, instead, you will need to fill out a form online. Once that form is submitted, you will be contacted within the next 24 hours. So if you’re planning to get a last-minute test, or a shortly-planned one, then Amerimed isn’t probably your safest bet.
