How to Pay Your Visitax: here is all you need to know
Mexico is one of the most popular destinations for tourists from all over the world. The natural wealth, climate and culture of the country attract almost 40 million tourists every year.
Do not forget, paying your VisiTax is essential for accessing Mexico’s most popular destinations – Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and Akumal.
This document is therefore mandatory, as in the case of the ESTA required to enter the USA.
These two electronic travel authorizations should in no way be confused since the VisiTax is not a real travel authorization, but rather a tourist tax.
The State of Quintana Roo: an unmissable destination in Mexico
The state of Quintana Roo is located in southern Mexico, and more precisely in the Yucatan Peninsula. It borders the Caribbean Sea.
Tourists appreciate it for its many interesting destinations such as Akumal, Playa del Carmen or Cancun.
It was in the early 1900s that the state of Quintana Roo began to arouse the interest of tourists. Millions of visitors every year travel to the Mexican state.
Cancún is perhaps the favorite destination for tourists. It is visited for its white sandy beaches whose sea is characterized by turquoise waters.
This destination is also interesting for its cuisine, internationally renowned. Think that the famous Tacos and Burritos, very important and exported pieces of Mexican cuisine, were born in this state.
Quintana Roo is also a place rich in history. Many enthusiasts travel to Tulum to visit the Mayan temples.
Fans of water activities instead go to the island of Isla Mujeres or to the beach of Playa del Carmen.
Everything there makes the state of Quintana Roo particularly attractive. It is therefore not surprising that 4 million visitors come here every year to enjoy the natural, historical and cultural beauties on offer.
Note that visitors come from all over the world.
Holidaymakers love to come and stay in this place also for the world.
In fact, parties are part of the daily routine and the nightlife is characterized by liveliness and a lot of participation.
The tourist goes to Quitana Roo to have fun, taste different typical culinary dishes and at the same time feel immersed in nature.
Do you feel tempted by the idea of visiting Quintana Roo too?
Cancún welcomes you for an unforgettable holiday immersed in its tropical climate.
But, before you go, you´ll have to pay a tourism tax called Visitax.
AS of 01 April 2021, a new Visitax requirement has come into force.
All visitors who wish to cross the borders of Quintana Roo must possess proof of payment of the new tax both to enter and to leave the state.
All about the new tourist tax Visitax Cancún
In 2020 the State of Quintana Roo offered and the local parliament approved the implementation on a new tax applicable to every tourist wishing to visit the State of Quintana Roo.
It allows travelers to stay in Mexico for tourist, business or transit purposes for up to 180 days.
It is requested every time you enter the country at one of the international airports of Cancún, Chetumal, Cozumel or Playa del Carmen.
The Visitax Cancun tourist tax is applied to travelers over 4 years of age.
It is due regardless of whether visitors travel to the territory of the State of Quintana Roo for tourist purposes or not.
If you have to stay for more than 180 days during the calendar year, it will be possible and necessary to apply for a formal Mexican entry visa.
The process of paying Visitax
When is the right time to pay for it?
Three possible cases are possible:
- make the payment of the Visitax before departure.
- Pay on arrival in Quintana Roo or
- before leaving the same state
Mexican authorities recommend the first option, and more precisely pay online before leaving the borders of your country.
This ensures that you have the certainty of a quiet stay, since you are sure to have everything in order before departure.
Some tourists prefer to pay the tax at the end of their trip, in their hotel or even at the airport. Note that however the payment is made online.
The cost of a Visitax is $48 per person.
The proof of payment must be downloaded and kept in the mobile phone or rather if printed and placed between the travel documents.
You will be asked at the airport of arrival and even before boarding the flight back home.
Where can I pay my Visitax Cancún?
Payment can be made online, on a dedicated website. This type of platform provides simple tools that allow you to complete the Visitax, both before and at the end of the trip.
The ideal is, as mentioned above, to make the payment before leaving for Mexico. There is peace of mind to have your travel documents complete and you will also save yourself unnecessary airport queues or mishaps that could interfere with your return flight.
The process is simple. Once you have paid for the Visitax, you will receive a unique QR code to present at the airport.
Two payment options are possible, Credit Card or PayPal.
Please note that Cancun Airport accepts payment in cash. The payment can be grouped into a single solution for several people, in the event of travel with the family or in a group.
Receipts and QR codes remain individual.
The information to be provided for Visitax
To obtain the Visitax it is necessary to fill in the online tax form of the State of Quintana Roo.
This step is necessary to be able to pay the tax and then obtain the receipt.
Here is the information requested in the online form:
- The number of passengers;
- The name, age and passport number of the traveler(s);
- The scheduled date of departure;
- Payment data.
You can add up to five people in one Visitax online form. If this number of travellers is exceeded, it will be necessary to fill in a second form.
The website will guide you. Choose the right solution for your needs.
Timing of the payment process and receipt of confirmation of the new Visitax fee
The Visitax request takes an average of 5 minutes to complete.
This includes filling out the online form and paying the fee. There is therefore nothing to worry about the complexity or duration of the online process.
You will receive a confirmation of the payment, as well as the unique QR code by e-mail, after a few minutes from having successfully completed the payment.
Be sure to keep a copy of the electronic confirmation. It will serve as evidence to be presented to the Airport Authorities in Cancun.
Finally, please note that the Visitax has a single validity.
In other words, every time you visit the State of Quintana Roo, you will need to pay a Visitax and take the receipt with you with the QR code on the road.
